Biographical / Historical
Ulric Joseph Bennett was born in Georgia on August 28, 1888. He graduated from the University of Georgia and studied public school administration at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, and Columbia University. He taught in rural schools in Georgia and also taught mathematics and science at Piedmont College in Athens, Georgia. He was principal of several high schools and later Superintendent of Schools at Fitzgerald, Georgia, and Dalton, Georgia, before he arrived in Fort Lauderdale in 1926. Bennett was principal of the Fort Lauderdale Central Schools until 1931. Bennett served as the Superintendent of the Broward County School District from 1931-1952. To honor the Superintendent, the Bennett Elementary School opened in 1952. Bennett died in Leon, Florida on January 28, 1982.
